Climate positive value chain by 2030

The significant impacts of climate change on the planet and society, combined with the fact that the construction and real estate sector generates substantial emissions, make climate the top sustainability priority for K2A. The target of achieving climate positivity by 2030 is based on K2A’s strong climate profile, built on timber construction, industrialised processes, and energy-efficient properties.

By continuing to reduce emissions from construction, K2A can also be a positive force for municipalities with ambitious climate agendas and their own climate targets. In these contexts, K2A has the opportunity to create value through sustainable property development. As housing planning is a municipal responsibility and the sector accounts for significant climate emissions, housing stands out as an area with a particularly strong impact on municipalities’ ability to achieve their climate goals.

K2A’s emissions have declined in recent years due to reduced emissions from property management and a slowdown in new construction. Total emissions are expected to increase in 2026 and 2027, before decreasing again in the years thereafter.

The world’s most sustainable listed residential real estate company

Individual sustainability metrics – such as energy performance, emissions, or certification levels – are important, but they capture only parts of the overall picture that determines a real estate company’s long-term value creation and risk profile in the sustainability area. This target creates a driving force for continuously developing the company’s processes to remain at the forefront, even as requirements and expectations evolve.

K2A monitors this target through GRESB, the most established international sustainability benchmark for the real estate sector. In 2025, K2A was ranked #1 in the Standing Assets, Residential Listed category and was thereby also awarded the GRESB Sector Leader distinction.

100 % environmentally certified properties under management

Environmental certifications are an established part of K2A’s quality framework, and the aim is for all properties under management to be environmentally certified. The certifications provide a third-party verified standard for energy, indoor environment, materials and operations, ensuring that the properties maintain a consistent and documented level of environmental performance.

Demand for environmentally certified residential properties is particularly strong among investors working with institutional capital, and in recent years certifications have been of decisive importance in the transactions carried out by K2A.
