Climate Target 2030

K2A is committed to achieving a climate-positive value chain by 2030, driven by emissions reductions in construction and property management.

Climate-Positive Value Chain by 2030

K2A’s objective is for its entire value chain to be climate positive by 2030. This means that, after reducing emissions as far as technically and economically feasible, the company will contribute to a net removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The approach is based on the principle of first reducing emissions across its own operations and then balancing any remaining emissions through measures that increase carbon sequestration.

At the core of this transition is a structured, data-driven approach to managing climate impact throughout the value chain – from project development and construction to property management. Climate impact is measured and monitored in accordance with the GHG Protocol’s Scopes 1–3, enabling consistent reporting and comparability over time and across different parts of the business.

Achieving the 2030 target will require a substantial reduction in emissions compared with the 2020 baseline year. K2A’s ambition is to reduce emissions by 90 per cent, with any remaining emissions balanced through carbon sinks and long-term carbon storage. Progress is driven by tangible actions across the business, with every part of the value chain contributing:

  • In construction, through the selection of materials, building systems and procurement practices that minimise climate impact.
  • In property management, through energy-efficient operations and increased use of renewable energy. K2A’s target is to use only renewable energy by 2030.
  • In business processes, through supplier requirements and the integration of climate considerations into investment decisions.

Through a continuous process of testing and implementing new solutions in future projects, K2A progressively strengthens the climate performance of its operations.

Progress towards the target is monitored through key metrics, which track emissions across K2A’s entire value chain. Together, they provide a comprehensive view of the pace of transition and the company’s progress towards the target.

K2A’s Emissions 2020-2025

The chart below shows K2A’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

K2A’s emissions have declined in recent years due to lower emissions from property management and the absence of new construction projects.

No new development projects were commenced on site between 2023 and 2025.

Emissions from K2A’s Development Projects

As construction accounts for the largest share of the company’s climate impact, emissions from new developments are closely monitored, both in absolute terms and relative to building area.

K2A applies the HS30 methodology for calculating climate impact in construction projects. This means that emissions beyond those covered by Sweden’s mandatory climate declarations are included, providing a more comprehensive view of a project’s total climate impact.

Construction Emissions per Square Metre

The data below presents emissions calculations for K2A’s reference projects, which are used to assess the impact of improved methods and year-on-year emissions reductions.

The calculations cover life cycle stages A1–A5.

ProjectYearCO2e/sqm GFADev since 2020
Mästaren, Stockholm2025255 kg-43 %
Diskusen, Växjö2022237 kg-47 %
Västern, Sundsvall2021363 kg-18 %
Hinderbanan, Gävle2020445 kg

The reported emissions for Mästaren are based on a preliminary assessment of the residential apartments of a block within K2A’s development project in Stockholm’s Slaughterhouse District (Slakthusområdet). The project has been under development for several years, and construction commenced in spring 2026. A full assessment of the project’s climate impact will be carried out upon completion. K2A’s ambition is for actual emissions to be lower than those indicated in the preliminary assessment.

Emissions from Development Projects, by Year

The data below presents actual emissions from K2A’s development projects, based on the year in which the emissions were reported in K2A’s sustainability reporting. Business travel and other emissions associated with the company’s employees or office operations are not included in these calculations.
